The CTSA remembers and prays for Gary Riebe-Estrella, SVD, who died on Monday, June 2, 2025.

Eternal rest grant unto Gary, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

The following remembrance was provided to the CTSA by member Carmen Nanko-Fernandez, Catholic Theological Union:

On Monday, June 2, 2025, at the Divine Word Residence in Techny, IL, Latino theological educator, theologian, professor, and mentor Gary Riebe Estrella, SVD passed away at the age of 79. A longtime member of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States (ACHTUS), Gary served as president twice, first in 1996-97 and again in 2009-10.

A member of the Divine Word Missionaries, Gary was one of the first graduates from the Catholic Theological Union. In 1992, he earned his STD in Teología Practica from Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca. In 1993 he returned to his alma mater in Chicago assuming teaching and administrative roles. He became the first Latino Dean at CTU and among the first Latin@s in the USA at a theological school to rise to this position. He served as the Vice President and Academic Dean of CTU for twelve years from 1996-2009. During that time, he was instrumental in creating a racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse faculty.

Gary’s activism, his early experiences in pastoral work with Latin@ communities, and his decades of scholarship and leadership in theological education resulted in various opportunities throughout his ministry to work with religious orders, organizations, and higher education as a consultant in areas of diversity, formation, and theological education. His publications in the area of Latin@ theologies and ministries are numerous, and establish Gary’s place as one of the first CTU religious alums to make a mark in Latin@ theologies and ministries.

I am so sorry to hear of Gary’s death. We worked together on a Lilly project in the 1990s and he was wonderful as a partner. He was thoughtful and gracious; the theological world has lost a friend and scholar.

Gary was the dean when I joined CTU. I was the first Asian to join the faculty, but many more were hired after me. Gary really made me feel very welcomed. When my wife secured a job in Iowa, I had to commute to Chicago. Gary graciously arranged my teaching schedule such that I only needed to come in on Tues morning and could return to Iowa by Thur evening. Thursdays were faculty meeting days that Gary ran superbly, together with the President Donald Senior. I remember that during the financial crisis they said a 5% salary cut was inevitable. A number of the faculty members who were Religious worried that this would be difficult for the lay people, especially the non-teaching staff. They volunteered to take 10 or 20% cuts if someone else didn't have to take any. Gary and Don then decided that all across the board will take a 5% cut, but that any staff can simply send an email saying they didn't want the cut and it would be honored. No explanations or justifications needed; just a one line email. They also invited anyone who wished to send an email saying they would take a higher cut. Again, just a one-liner. CTU managed to wade through the crisis. It's a really great place to be in, a wholesome school for both faculty and students. That's why one of its former students is our pope today! Rest in peace, Gary.

Gary Riebe-Estrella, SVD was the Academic Dean when I was hired to teach ethics at CTU. The move from teaching undergrads to teaching courses that always included graduate students for across the globe - and in the same course - included student pursuing several different kinds of pastoral or academic graduate degrees was - quite a stretch!
Gary was a wonderful cheerleader, always available to me and made it possible for me to make the transition with far more grace and skill than would have been possible. otherwise.
Last year, when after 25 years, I "retired" from CTU as The Erica and Harry John Family Professor Emerita of Catholic Theological Ethics, I received Gary's congratulatory message. Because of Gary, CTU became a school that was truly a community of faith, practicing more just and inclusive relationships, and respecting God's wonderful variety of cultures, and languages! Well done, thou good and faithful servant! Thank you, Gary!
