Rev. John Langan will long be remembered for his strength of character and his enormous contributions to ethics. He held a remarkable series of influential posts in academia and within the church. As a fellow Jesuit, I looked up to him with admiration for his wisdom and "grace under pressure." Whether he addressed topics in bioethics, social ethics or professional ethics, John could be counted on to "shed more light than heat" when controversial issues arose (and they often did during his long tenure in Washington, D.C., and on the Georegetown campus where he served for so many years). We will miss his rich insights, his calm demeanor and his dedication to knowledge and social progress. May he rest in peace, and may his friends and admirers find much consolation in his life and accomplishments.
