May he rest in peace. Bill made enormous contributions to Catholic intellectual life through his leadership at Orbis Books.

I first met Bill when we were both students at the U of Chicago Divinity School over 50 years ago. He had just returned from missionary work in New Guinea. He was sharp and had a great sense of humor. He was a great editor at Orbis. He will be greatly missed.

I was blessed to know Bill and benefit from his wisdom and scholarship for more than 30 years, first when we both worked for religious publishers and then when I had an administrative position with the Society of the Divine Word. May Bill now experience the fullness of the hundredfold reward.

I was extremely fortunate to count Bill as one of my friends and editor at Orbis Books. As editor, he has made an enormous contribution to the diffusion of Catholic theology in the U.S. and internationally. It was with deep gratitude that I dedicated my undeservedly controversial little book to him as "redattore straordinario." Once, he literally rewrote one manuscript in the series I edited. I suggested he put his name as co-author, but he humbly declined. After retiring from Orbis, despite poor health, Bill kept in contact with his friends, especially though his Christmas/New Year encyclical. I miss you tremendously, Bill! May you rest in peace.

Bill was enormously helpful in guiding our five-volume "History of Vatican II" through to publication. And we should not forget his brave defense of Jacques Dupuis.
