Dear Colleagues and Friends,
With great sorrow, tonight I write to let you know that our brother and friend Gustavo Gutierrez OP passed away this evening. We are grateful to God for his life, his friendship, and the enormous gift of his theological vision. I met Gustavo for the first time when I was 22 years old. He was personally influential in my decision to become a theologian. He helped me come to grips with the extreme contrast between wealth and poverty that I witnessed daily as a child growing up on the U.S.-Mexico border. Mil gracias Gustavo for your work on behalf of the poor and for your love of the people of God and of God’s coming reign. I do not have any further information at this time.
