04/08/2022 2:21 PM | Anonymous

The CTSA remembers long standing member Rev. Msgr. John F. Porter who died this morning, April 8, 2022.   John and his sister, Sr. Ann Porter, O.P., faithfully attended the CTSA annual convention.  Please keep them in your prayers.

Eternal rest grant unto John, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Grand Rapids diocesan priests John Porter and the late Charles Dautremont and Porter's sister Dominican Ann Porter were fixtures at CTSA conventions over the decades. I believe they were 'grandfathered' in at one point by a rule that said members need not be PhDs or university-employed. Each was proud to attend regularly, to learn from the proceedings, and to rub elbows with professional theologians. For many years John was head of the diocesan Marriage Tribunal. I'm not sure where he got his training (likely CUA), but he exhibited stellar patience, pastoral care, and a tilt toward petitioners seeking canonical relief. A good man and a gentle soul -- RIP, John
