The Decolonizing Catholic Theology Interest Group cordially invites CTSA members to a pre-conference event with the Executive Director of the Black Church Food Security Network, Rev. Dr. Heber Brown III. Rev. Dr. Brown began the Black Church Food Security Network after stepping down from his 14-year role as pastor of the Pleasant Hope Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD in 2015. The network was founded in the wake of the Freddie Gray Uprisings and works to connect Black churches across the U.S. and their gardens with Black farmers to create local Black-owned food systems. In this pre-conference event, CTSA members will receive a guided tour of the Pleasant Hope Baptist Church garden and engage in a conversation with Rev. Dr Heber Brown about his work with the Food Security Network. In light of this year’s theme of social salvation, the focus of this event on food security and farming aims to show how the social implications of salvation (theosis and deification) might require a reorientation to the land, especially for those who are the descendants of African enslaved persons that were once forced into involuntary, extractive, and violent relationships with land.
